Dana Lynne Varga

Dr. Dana Lynne Varga is a highly sought-after soprano, voice teacher, and career coach, as well as the Founder and Artistic Director of MassOpera. She is a dedicated advocate for singers, committed to advancing the classical vocal industry and encouraging individuals to forge their own professional paths. Dana frequently presents vocal masterclasses and lectures on entrepreneurial musicianship across the country.

Renowned for her “radiant soprano,” Dana is celebrated as a dynamic interpreter of a diverse repertoire on both the operatic and concert stages. Recently, she has performed as a soloist in Mozart’s and Brahms’ Requiems at Carnegie Hall and Symphony Hall in Boston and appeared with the Boston Pops as a member of their professional octet.

Dana’s favorite operatic roles include Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte, Musetta in La Bohème, Anna Maurrant in Street Scene, Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus, Micaëla in Carmen, Hanna Glawari in The Merry Widow, and Alcina in Alcina. In 2019, her portrayal of Pallas Athene with Odyssey Opera received critical acclaim. She has performed with companies such as Teatro Nuovo, Opera Maine, MassOpera, Boston Lyric Opera, Odyssey Opera, Boston Opera Collaborative, PANopera, Connecticut Lyric Opera, and the Aldeburgh (Britten-Pears) Music Festival.

Dana’s concert engagements are equally extensive. In 2019, she made her Carnegie Hall debut with Mid-America Productions, performing Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass. Other concert highlights include Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis with the Cantata Singers, Bach’s Magnificat and Mass in B Minor with the Rhode Island Civic Chorale and Orchestra, Mendelssohn’s Elijah with the Greenwich Choral Society, Vaughan Williams’ A Sea Symphony with the Metropolitan Chorale, Mozart’s Great Mass in C Minor with Coro Allegro, as well as numerous performances of Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s The Creation, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9.

Dana was the second prize winner of the 2019 American Prize in Art Song and Oratorio, and the first prize winner of the 2016 Classical Singer National Vocal Competition. She placed second in the 2016 Rochester Oratorio Society Classical Idol Competition and was a semifinalist in the 2016 New York Oratorio Society Competition. Dana holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance from Boston University and a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from the New England Conservatory.
